Over the weekend we picked up some new-to-us decorative items from family that were moving. One of the items was a (very heavy) mirror with a beautiful ornate dark wood frame that we were excited to add to our house decor.
Here are the steps we took to hang a heavy mirror
Step 1 – Choose your hanging hardware.
Our mirror had three existing hanging hardware hooks installed on the back, but one was broken. We decided to go with a new heavy duty french cleat that was rated to support up to 100 pounds.
#DIY TIP – You can use your bathroom scale to weigh your mirror – just hold the mirror lightly while resting the bottom of it on the scale (the weight won’t be exact but it will give you an idea of the range you need to make sure the hanging hardware can support)
Step 2 – Choose a spot to hang your mirror.
We held it up against a few walls and ended up deciding that for us it worked best as the bottom of the main staircase.
Step 3 – Prepare the wall.
Using a stud finder mark any studs out on your wall and remove any obstructions.
Step 4 – Affix one of the cleats to the wall.
Make sure to to level the cleat on the wall so your mirror hangs straight. The hanging hardware we bought came with a bubble level but any level will do.
Step 5 – Attach the other cleat to the back of the mirror.
Make sure to attach it level.
Step 6 – Hang the mirror.
Step back to check the placement and make any adjustments as required.
Using these simple steps we were able to easily hang a heavy mirror. You could use the same process for any heavy pieces of art or floating shelving units you want to install.
